Four Surprisingly Unhealth Salads
Source: (healthmad.com)
Most people think “healthy” when they hear the word salad, but even the most healthful greens and veggies can be destroyed by too much salad dressing, croutons, and grated cheese. Here are unhealthy salads you’ll want to think twice about ordering next time you’re in the market for something green.
Unhealthy Salads: Cobb Salad
When you order the Chili’s Southwest Cobb Salad and think you’re virtuous for eating something green and leafy, you may be disappointed. This disaster of a salad has 1080 calories in a single serving along with sixteen grams of saturated fat and a whopping 2650 milligrams of sodium. If you didn’t have high blood pressure before, you’ll be well on your way to getting it after eating a few of these babies. If you’re eating one as a splurge, at least do yourself a favor and leave off the bacon and go light on the cheese and dressing. Better yet, make your own healthier version at home.
Unhealthy Salads: Caesar Salad
Caesar salads are scary enough with their cheese, croutons, and high calorie dressing, but the Grilled Steak Caesar Salad at Applebee’s takes unhealthy to a whole new level. With 1190 calories and 76 grams of fat, even Caesar would have raised his eyebrows. Throw in 1900 milligrams of sodium and you can start planning your first angioplasty. To be fair, not all Caesar salads have steak in them, but most have too much parmesan cheese, croutons, and high-fat dressing. Save it for a special treat – not as a way to get your daily dose of greens.
Unhealthy Salads: Tuna Salad
Tuna has heart-healthy omega-3’s which should be healthy, right? Not when you throw in a generous dollop of mayonnaise. Most tuna salads have a deceptively large amount of the white, creamy stuff which offsets the heart healthy benefits of the tuna. You can make a light version at home using low fat or fat-free mayonnaise or by substituting plain yogurt for half of the mayonnaise. Your homemade version will probably taste better anyway.
Unhealthy Salads: Taco Salad
This is the cute, little salad that comes in a crispy, tortilla bowl that’s edible. The Taco Bell version has a frightening 790 calories and a sobering 42 grams of fat. With statistics like this, you’re better off splurging on the enchiladas. One way you can limit the calorie damage is to hold the tortilla strips and throw the tortilla shell bowl away after you finish – instead of nibbling on it. Still – 1670 milligrams of sodium is nothing to sneeze at.
Don’t forget that you can turn almost any plate of greens into an unhealthy salad if you toss on too much cheese and bacon, too many croutons, and drown it in dressing. Wise up and don’t make your salads more decadent than the doughnut you’re going to treat yourself to because you ate a salad instead of a big, juicy steak.
