I was originally drawn to Patricia Cornwell’s books because of the character Kay Scarpetta. Kay was written as a strong medical and legal expert who could definitely hold her own in any given situation. This latest novel paints Kay Scarpetta as a lonely medical examiner who is possibly regretting her latest career choice and move to another city. Her genius like niece is sick as is her long time assistant. Pete has done the unthinkable and her romantic relationship is rocky. What is there to look up to and admire? Kay has now fallen into a downward spiral that leaves little to the imagination. I used to read one of Patricia Cornwell’s books within three days because the suspense would kill me . . . . I took two and a half weeks to read this novel because I was bored. It lacks the intrigue and suspense of her former books. I will be looking for a new “favorite author” in the future.

  2. I loved and hated this book. I enjoyed Kay and her relationship with the regulars — Benton, Lucy, Marino and Rose. Those relationships are changed in important ways in this book, ways that promise to have an impact on future Scarpetta stories. I loved the way the stage was set for these upcoming transitions. I also liked Bull, a character I expect to be adopted into the Scarpetta “family.” What I hated, though, were the crimes themselves. Marilyn Self seems to have replaced that silly werewolf as the bane of Scarpetta’s existance. While she’s an improvement over the hairy beast, she’s not much of one. I found it hard to believe that someone with Marilyn Self’s vast collection of psychological problems could operate so successfully in the pressure-cooker environment of celebrity and television. Too many people would deal with her day in/day out, too much money would be tied to her show and her “brand” for something like this to happen. This critical flaw made the story hard for me to lose myself in.

  3. I have always enjoyed the Kay Scarpetta books – as a matter of fact, I own several of them. I started reading Book of the Dead – got to Pages 23-25 and realized it was just another America/Americans/George Bush bash – I slammed it shut and returned it to the library, with no further desire to read it, much less purchase it. I simply cannot understand how people who benefit so much from this country can feel no guilt whatsoever in constantly insulting it and despising it. Patricia – just shut up and write. Nobody is interested in your political views.

  4. Bon Jovi Fan says:

I have enjoyed most of the books in this series. The Book of the Dead was enjoyable, however, I did not like the way it ended. The only other complaint I have is the constant references to Lesbians in almost all of her books. Not everyone agrees with the homosexual lifestyle and when I read the books I feel it is being forced out there as an acceptable way of life. The rights of people who believe in God are being taken away every day and his name and anything to do with him is being removed yet these people are being forced to read books and watch television that promotes everything they are against. Please stop focusing so much on Lucy and her sexual preferences.

  5. This book is better than the last one , but still it isn’t the best of Patricia Cornwell
